Kcproud recently checked out Kansas City's hottest new club: Fabulous Flo's Cabaret. After three visits on weekday and weekend nights I feel we have a well-rounded enough opinion to share with our readers. In a word, Flo's new home is, well to quote John Koop, "FABULOUS!" And I couldn't agree with him more!
Leave it to Kansas City's own gay renaissance man to acquire the venue and make it over in his own image. Flo's Fabulous Cabaret opened seven weeks ago to much acclaim. The first time I went there was on an initial advance-team run. Charlie & I dropped in on a Monday night a couple weeks ago. The club wasn't exactly hoppin' but what would you expect on a Monday night? Charlie & I marveled at all the work John had done. Fresh paint and carpet everywhere, the north wall has been blown out to accommodate a new stage and a new dance area occupies the northeast corner. As new booths line the south wall, the round high-tables, bar area, and bathrooms retain the previous owner's modern charm. John's interior designer must be credited here. Natasha's interior always felt so cold to me. Not any more. The leopard print carpet, light diffusing draperies, and wonderfully swanky black leather booths are welcoming enough to make anyone comfortable for the show to come. John was kind enough to take us on an abreviated tour. First we went out to the fabulous patio for a brief smoke. Be sure to leave your drink at the courtesy table -- for no beverages are allowed outside the venue. But ahhh, the patio has been completely refurbished and although not covered will sure to be the place to be this summer! Back inside, John leads us upstairs to the yet unfinished second floor. His vision pales only to the amazing northern views of the downtown lights. We hope he won't cover these windows! Several bars and dance floors are planned for this space, but for now it remains inaccessible to the general public. As we go back downstairs, he explains how the back room will feature his newest addition, yet another bar, but this one with taps! If there is one thing I must interject here is that Flo's has no draft beer at this point... it is all bottles. Just an FYI. It's my understanding draft beer will be available as early as Pride weekend. As far as first impressions go Flo's makes its case that it is not a matter of whether or not it will be Kansas City's new hot spot, but rather it's just a matter of time. Congratulations, John!
